How to play SOTbot Vs The Legacy

Guide SOTbot from left to right through each level, shooting scammers with his tokenisation beam and jumping the gaps. Every level ends with a boss based on an outdated way of taking payments. Beat it to move on to the next level.

Controls

  • Move: arrow keys or A and D, or the left stick on a controller
  • Jump: Space, W or the up arrow, or A on a controller
  • Fire: X or J, or X and the right trigger on a controller
  • Shield: Shift or L, or the bumpers on a controller (from level 3)
  • Dash: C or K, or B and the left trigger on a controller (from level 4)
  • Super move: V, or Y on a controller
  • Pause: P or Esc, or Start on a controller

Lives, power-ups and letters

You get five lives for the whole game, so every hit counts. Jump into a SOTpay block from underneath to power up: SOTbot grows, his beam doubles in strength, and the next hit powers him down without costing a life. Collect the letters S, O, T, p, a and y in a level to charge the SOTpay super move, which clears the screen and knocks a quarter off the boss's health. Anything a boss fires can be shot down.

The ten legacy bosses

Each boss is an old payment habit that still costs businesses time, money or security.

  1. Lord Chequeley, High Street: a cheque book that throws bouncing cheques. Cheques take days to clear, where pay-by-link gets you paid in minutes.
  2. The Fax Machine, Back Office: sprays paper across the screen.
  3. The Knuckle-Buster, Market Stalls: the old carbon card imprinter, slamming the ground with shockwaves.
  4. Big Ears, Call Centre: a giant ear that hears card numbers read out over the phone. Secure phone payments keep card details away from your team.
  5. The Post-it Colossus, Reception Desk: built from sticky notes with card details scribbled on them.
  6. The Tethered Terminal, Hotel: a card machine swinging on its cable.
  7. The Cash-Only Meter, Car Park: spits coins in every direction. See how a parking payment system works.
  8. The Bill Folder, Restaurant: vanishes and reappears, just like the bill at the end of a meal. TipLink lets guests pay at the table.
  9. The Sloth of Settlement, The Bank: throws clocks that leave you pending.
  10. The Legacy, Server Room: every outdated method fused into one final boss.

The real payment technology behind SOTbot's powers

SOTbot unlocks a new ability in each of the first seven levels, and each one is named after something SOTpay does for real businesses.

  • Tokenisation beam: sensitive card data is replaced with a harmless token, part of staying PCI DSS compliant.
  • Link jump: named after pay-by-link, where customers pay from a secure link sent by text, email or chat.
  • 3D Secure shield: strong customer authentication, one of the layers of fraud prevention.
  • Open Banking dash: payments straight from a customer's bank account with open banking.
  • Recurring payments: faster fire, inspired by payment automation that collects regular payments for you.
  • PCI-DSS armour: tops your lives back up to five.
  • Split payments: fires three beams at once.
